Well designed hatch style letterboxes are between $300 and $600. Most are Colourbond steel with minimal customization or personality. The closest Artisan, relatively sustainable  style letterbox to LetterboxArt Concept is this Corten Steel Design. It retails for $600 to $800 (includes the security chute and locking). Then there are the Bunnings style mass produced tiny tin letterboxes for $60 to $100.

Low key, low cost, local to start

Australia has 6.4 million freestanding homes.

If 1 % of those homeowners chose an artistic letterbox that reflects their style, that’s 64 000 potential buyers. At an average retail of $350, that’s $22.4 million in sales and around $12.3 million gross profit — before adding Airbnb hosts, small businesses  and chains like childcare centers which are often in suburban locales that need curbside signage. Artist concept, Charity collaborations, Kits and 'Franchises' might be worth exploring down the track.

  • Construction with H3 pine should be simple with minimal tools required. An inexpensive way to create prototypes is to utilize Mamong Point Woodies Equipment and Expertise.

  • Hire the space and trainer to do the actual manufacture and test the Artisan work shop concept.

Start with:

  1. Letterbox drop into ugly or unfunctional letterboxes in affluent suburbs

  2. Offer a discount if buyers allow web address on actual letterbox

  3. One or two prototypes on display at the Warners Bay Garden Centre that have the website on the tag?

Durability:

H3 Pine Letterbox. Mini orb Lid?

​

1. Select and prep timber

    •    Choose FSC- or PEFC-certified H3 radiata pine (straight, knot-free if possible).

    •    Let timber acclimatise in a dry, shaded area for 1–2 days before cutting.

 

2. Cut to size

    •    Measure and cut all panels to your design dimensions.

    •    Drill holes or rebates as needed before assembly.

 

3. Reseal exposed cuts

    •    Brush or dab Enseal Green, Ecoseal, or similar preservative on every cut, drilled, or notched area.

    •    Allow to dry per instructions (usually 1–2 hours).

💡 This restores the surface barrier that cutting removes.

 

4. Assemble

    •    Use stainless or galvanised screws (to prevent staining).

    •    Apply exterior-grade waterproof wood glue at joints for extra sealing.

Two part epoxy to fill

5. Finish

    •    Lightly sand, then coat with high-quality exterior paint or decking oil (UV-resistant).

    •    Focus on edges, joints, and screw heads.

    •    For best durability: two topcoats, with light sanding in between.

 

6. Mount & maintain

    •    Install above ground with good drainage and overhang protection (e.g., mini-orb lid).

    •    Once a year: wash down, check for cracks, touch up paint or reseal exposed spots.
